Iconic
Version 0.9.2

What is this thing?
This is intended as a developer tool to assist in the development of toolbar icons for OpenOffice, NeoOffice, and StarOffice. As of this version, development is limited to Mac OS X, but icon sets developed with this tool can be used on any platform. Windows and Linux compatibilty will be along shortly.

This program began as a NeoIconer, but has been re-written from scratch as a visual tool.

NOTE: NeoOffice 2.0 users besure to download and run the permissions fix program!

Requirements:

Mac OS X 10.3 or later.
Firefox 1.5 or later.
NeoOffice 2.0.x -or- OpenOffice for Mac 2.0.x

How to set up (super easy!):

If you are using NeoOffice: Be sure to download and run the permissions fix.
If you are using OpenOffice for Mac: Contact me for information on configuring the program.

1) Put the program in it's own folder

Such as /Applications/Iconic/

This directory will be the programs 'root'

2) Put icon sets in your root folder

Iconic ships with a few sample iconset, hopefully there will to download soon. Placing icon sets into your root directory should make them visible to Iconic the next time you run it.
NOTE: Office 2.0 uses different icon names from previous versions, so icon sets that don't specifically say they will work with Iconic probably won't. Sorry.
NOTE: to create a new iconset, just create a new directory and start putting your icons into it.

3) Run it.

Just click on the Iconic icon and you're off!

Iconic Interface:
(this part definitely needs screenshots, if anyone's got any free time...)

The main screen is comprised of three parts. On the left, is Icon Set Area, to the right is the Program Area, and at the bottom is the Message Area.

Icon Set Area

The first line is a drop-down lets you pick from icon sets. It will list anything in your root directory that is a directory.

The 2nd line is the selected icons name and the dimentions of a single icon from that set.

The 3rd line is how the iconset is classified. Complete icon sets for Office include large and small iconsets, in both high and regular contrast.

The 4th line is a sample imagestrip of the icons from the selected set.

The 5th line has two buttons:
View Icons: Allows you to browse the existing icons in your set, compare them with original icons, and identify what icons aren't in your set.
NOTE: On the View Icons screen, a broken image mean
s the icon doesn't exist (I'll clean it up soon)
Iconset Settings: brings the Iconset Settings screen up in the Program Area (see below.)

Program Area

This area can change when various buttons are selected. The default contains two buttons:
Replace!: this big button is what makes it happen: It takes your selected iconset and installs it into your copy of office according to the settings you have selected
Program options: brings the Program Options screen up in the Program Area (see below.)

Message Area

This is where the program will tell you what it is doing, and also tell you about any errors it had.

The program will tell you when it has completed whatever tasks it is trying to do, and it's generally a good idea to wait for it to do so.

Iconset Settings

When you select the Iconset Settings button in the Icon Set Area, the Iconset Settings window appears.

The first part of is two set of radio buttons, allowing you to declare if your icon set is large or small, high or regular contrast.

The second part is a button, 'Reset sample icon Imagestrip'. Pressing this will rebuild the sample icon stripe in Icon Set Area. This is useful if you have added icons since it was first built.

The bottom part is two buttons:
Cancel: close Iconset Settings without saving your settings
Save: save your settings and close window.

Program Options

When you select the 'Program options' button in the Program Area, the Program Options window appears.

At the top is a drop-down that allows you to select which version of office you would like to work on. (NOTE: Currently only NeoOffice is supported by this secton)

Below that, there are two buttons:
refresh base icons: This button will refresh the icons you are building on top of from the office program. Useful if you are switching the icon set you are working with, as it will prevent strays from the old iconset from getting in the new one.
restore Office icons: This button removes your custom icons from your office program, so that it will appears as if did when you first installed it.

The final line is a 'Return' button. It closes the Program Options window.

How get your icons included:

There's no formal process just yet. I'm less of a gatherer than a hacker, but if you send me something I will pass it on to those who might do something with it.

Please don't send me anything copyrighted, either by yourself or others. That's in bad taste.

How to uninstall Iconic:
----------
Select the 'Restore the original Office images', then delete the 'root' directory you installed Iconic into.

To-dos:
(as with most to-do lists, ideas will always out pace development. Feel free to let me know what is important to you and what is missing.)
